Spotlight on Stage: How DSM Alumni Lead in Theatre
At Drama School Mumbai (DSM), students don’t just learn to perform; they transform into dynamic, confident actors ready to make their mark in the world of theatre. Each journey is unique, and our alumni embody DSM’s commitment to excellence and growth. Here, we celebrate four graduates who’ve built thriving careers in theatre, each with a story that reflects the transformative power of DSM training.
Hrishabh Kanti: Conquering Stage Fright to Find Confidence
“It was during DSM training that I learnt how to learn.”
– Hrishabh Kanti
Known for his roles in Anandowari, Golden Jubilee, Tumhare Baare Mein, and Barricade, Hrishabh Kanti’s journey on stage began with a challenge: conquering his stage fright. Before DSM, the stage felt like a daunting place. “Performing weekly helped me shed that fear,” he recalls, highlighting DSM’s consistent, hands-on approach to training.
A memorable breakthrough came during an outdoor, rain-soaked Shakespeare performance. Hrishabh learnt to connect deeply with his character and the natural elements around him. At DSM, he found ways to balance instinct with technique, allowing his performance to flourish with authenticity.
Akash Ghosalkar: Embracing Vulnerability to Fuel Artistic Growth
“Understanding how my body holds tension was a revelation.”
– Akash Ghosalkar
For Mumbai-raised Akash Ghosalkar, DSM opened doors to new growth and learning. Known for his work in Shikhandi, 07/07/07, and Barricade, Akash found DSM to be a space where he could fully explore vulnerability. “Trying and not giving up is crucial,” he reflects, a lesson he carried forward as he embraced the process of becoming an artist.
Through DSM’s intense physical training, Akash gained insight into how his body held tension—a revelation that deepened his performances. Connections formed at DSM opened new opportunities, paving the way for collaborations and meaningful work in the theatre industry.
Vaishnavi RP: Creating Her Own Path with Initiative and Passion
“I learnt that I shine when I’m not holding back.”
– Vaishnavi RP
As the founder of the theatre group Unheard Elephants, Vaishnavi RP exemplifies DSM’s value of self-initiative. “You have to create opportunities for yourself,” she shares, crediting DSM with helping her develop a proactive approach in theatre. Known for her powerful performances, Vaishnavi learnt at DSM to value vulnerability and authenticity in her craft.
In a key exercise led by actor Geetanjali Kulkarni, Vaishnavi discovered the strength that comes from letting go. Her experience at DSM taught her the importance of physicality in acting, which she continues to draw on as she carves her path in theatre.
Dusha: Perfecting Her Craft with Discipline and Self-Discovery
“Realising how to align my body and mind was transformative.”
– Dusha
Dusha’s journey at DSM taught her the importance of commitment, discipline, and balance. She has collaborated with esteemed directors such as Mohit Takalkar, Sunil Shanbag, and Mallika Shah in productions like Love and Information, Barricade, and I Killed My Mother. DSM helped her realise that, much like cooking a perfect meal, great theatre requires precision and dedication.
A personal breakthrough came when a simple gesture in I Killed My Mother—putting her hands in her pockets—helped her unlock new dimensions of her character. DSM guided her from a “head centre” thinker to someone who integrates physicality and intellect in her performances, deepening her approach to every role.
Building Confident, Passionate Theatre Professionals
DSM prepares its alumni to lead with confidence, vulnerability, and creativity. Through its intensive, supportive training environment, DSM helps students embrace their unique strengths, build resilience, and develop the skills needed for a successful career in theatre.
Whether you’re looking to perform, direct, or produce, DSM’s transformative approach will help you unlock your full potential.
